Taxonomy: Fringilla amandava Linnaeus, 1758, Calcutta, West Bengal, India.
Genus sometimes subsumed in Estrilda. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- amandava ( Linnaeus, 1758) - patchily in Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
- flavidiventris ( Wallace, 1864) - Myanmar, S China (SW Yunnan), NW & C Thailand, and Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Flores, Sumba, Roti, Timor).
- punicea ( Horsfield, 1821) - SE Thailand, Cambodia, S Vietnam, Java and Bali.
