Taxonomy: Ramphastos sulfuratus Lesson, 1830, Mexico.
Distinctive within the so-called “croaking group”, which also includes R. dicolorus, R. brevis, R. vitellinus and R. toco. Not especially closely related to any other species, with nearest relatives probably R. dicolorus and R. brevis. Races weakly defined, intergrading where they meet. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • sulfuratus Lesson, 1830 - SE Mexico (from Veracruz) S through Belize and Guatemala to Honduras.
  • brevicarinatus Gould, 1854 - Guatemala, Belize and Honduras S to N Colombia (R Atrato, lower R Cauca and lower R Magdalena) and extreme NW Venezuela.
