Taxonomy: Pelecanus pygmeus [sic] Pallas, 1773, Caspian Sea.
Sometimes considered conspecific with P. niger. Frequently placed in Halietor or Microcarbo. Monotypic.

Distribution: Discontinuously from SE Europe and Turkey to region of Aral Sea; formerly N Africa.
