Taxonomy: Nectarinia hypogrammica S. Müller, 1843, Sumatra and Borneo.
No obvious close relatives; tongue morphology unique within family, on which grounds this species may even merit placement in its own subfamily. Five subspecies recognized.

- lisettae (Delacour, 1926) - N Myanmar, S China (SW Yunnan), N Thailand and N & C Indochina.
- nuchale (Blyth, 1843) - S Myanmar, S Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
- mariae (Deignan, 1943) - S Indochina, including E Cambodia.
- lisettae (Delacour, 1926) - N Myanmar, S China (SW Yunnan), N Thailand and N & C Indochina.
- nuchale (Blyth, 1843) - S Myanmar, S Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
- mariae (Deignan, 1943) - S Indochina, including E Cambodia.
- natunense (Chasen, 1935) - N Natuna Is.
- hypogrammicum (S. Müller, 1843) - Sumatra and Borneo.
