Taxonomy: Ardea purpurea Linnaeus, 1766, in Oriente; restricted to France.
Birds of Cape Verde Is sometimes considered separate race (bournei), or even distinct species, Cape Verde Heron. Three subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- purpurea Linnaeus, 1766 - W Palearctic, including parts of N Africa, E to Kazakhstan and Iran; Africa S of Sahara, Cape Verde Is.
- madagascariensis Oort, 1910 - Madagascar.
- manilensis Meyen, 1834 - S & E Asia, Indonesia, Philippines.
