Purple-capped Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus porphyraceus) - HBW 4, p. 211
French: Ptilope de Clémentine
German: Purpurscheitel-Fruchttaube
Spanish: Tilopo Coronipúrpura
Other common names: Crimson-crowned/Purple-crowned/Purple-capped Fruit-dove, Pohnpei/Ponape Dove
Taxonomy: Columba porhyracea Temminck, 1821, Tongatabu.
Sometimes considered conspecific with P. pelewensis; within the large P. purpuratus species-group, these two have been considered to form a subgroup with P. richardsii and P. greyii. Race ponapensis formerly considered a distinct species, incorporating hernsheimi. Proposed race graeffei of Wallis and Futuna, and Niuafo'ou (Tonga) is probably a hybrid population between nominate and race fasciatus; marshallianus included in hernsheimi. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- ponapensis Finsch, 1878 - Chuuk and Pohnpei (C & E Caroline Is).
- hernsheimi Finsch, 1880 - Kosrae (E Caroline Is); formerly also on Ebon (Marshall Is).
- porphyraceus (Temminck, 1821) - small islands of Fiji (Vatulele, Makogai, Wakaya, Yadua, Lau group), Tonga and Niue.
- fasciatus Peale, 1848 - Samoa.
