Sometimes considered conspecific with P. pelewensis; within the large P. purpuratus species-group, these two have been considered to form a subgroup with P. richardsii and P. greyii. Race ponapensis formerly considered a distinct species, incorporating hernsheimi. Proposed race graeffei of Wallis and Futuna, and Niuafo'ou (Tonga) is probably a hybrid population between nominate and race fasciatus; marshallianus included in hernsheimi. Four subspecies recognized.
