Taxonomy: Falco mexicanus Schlegel, 1851, Monterey, Mexico = California.
Formerly placed in Gennaia or Hierofalco. May form superspecies with F. jugger and F. biarmicus, and perhaps also with F. cherrug and F. rusticolus; but probably closer to F. peregrinus. Monotypic.
Distribution: SW Canada through W & WC USA to N Mexico; winters to EC USA and NC Mexico.
