Taxonomy: Falco plumbeus Gmelin, 1788, Cayenne.
Sometimes treated as conspecific with I. mississippiensis, with which forms superspecies. Monotypic.
Distribution: NE Mexico (Tamaulipas) S through Central America to South America, W of Andes S to W Ecuador, E of Andes S to Paraguay and N Argentina.
