Other common names: Plain Wanderer, Collared Plains-wanderer/Hemipode, Turkey Quail

Taxonomy: Pedionomus torquatus Gould, 1841, plains near Adelaide, South Australia.
Traditionally placed in Gruiformes, in close association with Turnicidae, but evidence currently available suggests link with Thinocoridae (see page 538). Populations in New South Wales were proposed as separate race, goulburni, but no genuine geographical variation detectable. Monotypic.

Distribution: E Australia.
