Taxonomy: Charadrius cayanus Latham, 1790, Cayenne.
Sometimes placed in monospecific Hoploxypterus. Shows several similarities with Charadrius, including plumage details and some physiological features. Monotypic.
Distribution: South America E of Andes, from E Colombia to mouth of R Amazon, then S to Paraguay, SE Brazil and extreme NE Argentina (Misiones).
