Taxonomy: Tringa Chirurgus Scopoli, 1786, Luzon.
Genus occasionally included within Jacana, but alternatively considered to be one of the forms most distant from that genus. Monotypic.

Distribution: Pakistan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka through Myanmar to SE China and Taiwan, and S to SE Asia and Malay Peninsula, S Borneo and Phillippines. Winters sparsely S to Sumatra and Java, and also W to Oman and Yemen.
