Taxonomy: Otidiphaps nobilis Gould, 1870, “Probably procured on some one of the islands of the Eastern Archipelago or in New Guinea”.
Affinities uncertain. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- nobilis Gould, 1870 - Batanta and Waigeo, and mountains of W New Guinea (Arfak, Wandamen, Weyland, Snow and mountains on upper R Memberamo).
- aruensis Rothschild, 1928 - Aru Is.
- cervicalis E. P. Ramsay, 1880 - mountains of E & SE New Guinea (Saruwaged, Sepik, Kuper).
- insularis Salvin & Godman, 1883 - Fergusson I (D'Entrecasteaux Is).
