Taxonomy: Macropus phasianellus Spix, 1824, Tonantins, north-west Brazil.
Population of Mexico and Central America often recognized as race rufigularis, this being based on a bird in juvenile plumage; neither juveniles nor adults, however, differ between areas. Monotypic.
Distribution: S Mexico (Oaxaca) and Central America to Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Brazil and Amazonian Peru then on to Bolivia, Paraguay and N Argentina.
