Taxonomy: Ptilogonys nitens Swainson, 1838, Mexico.
Earlier suggestion of relationship with the turdine genus Myadestes contradicted by DNA-DNA hybridization data. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • lepida Van Tyne, 1925 - SW USA and NW Mexico.
  • nitens (Swainson, 1838) - S USA (S Texas) S to S Mexican plateau.
