Taxonomy: Dysporus variegatus Tschudi, 1843, islands off Peru.
Perhaps closely related to S. nebouxii, though recent work suggests that they are more different than previously thought. Monotypic.

Distribution: W coast of S America, in area of Humboldt Current; breeding grounds N Peru to C Chile, with non breeders dispersing as far as SW Ecuador.
