Taxonomy: Alca psittacula Pallas, 1769, Kamchatka.
Monotypic.
Distribution: Chukotskiy Peninsula S to Commander Is, Kamchatka, Sea of Okhotsk (Matykyl I) and Kuril Is, and W Alaska from Diomede Is and Norton Sound S to Aleutians and E to N Gulf of Alaska (Prince William Sound). Winters mostly at sea and along coasts, often at limit of open water near breeding locations, from Bering Sea S to N Japan and casually to S California. General pattern of distribution and limits poorly known.
