Other common names: Paradise Duck, New Zealand Shelduck
Taxonomy: Anas variegata Gmelin, 1789, Dusky Bay, New Zealand.
Sometimes placed in genus Casarca, together with T. ferruginea, T. cana and T. tadornoides. Considered by some to form superspecies with T. ferruginea, T. cana and T. tadornoides. Hybridization with other Tadorna species reported in captivity. Monotypic.
Distribution: North I, South I and Stewart I, New Zealand.
