Taxonomy: Alcedo Dea Linnaeus, 1758, Surinam.
Previously placed in a separate genus Urogalba, but this now subsumed by Galbula. Races described largely on the basis of differences in size and plumage tone, but these may represent only clinal variation. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • dea (Linnaeus, 1758) - S Venezuela (upper R Orinoco), the Guianas, and Brazil N of Amazon (E of R Negro).
  • brunneiceps (Todd, 1943) - SE Colombia (E Guainía, Vaupés, S to Amazonas), E Ecuador, E Peru, and W Brazil (W of R Negro and, S of Amazon, between R Madeira and R Tapajós).
  • phainopepla (Todd, 1943) - W Brazil S of Amazon (W of R Madeira).
  • amazonum (P. L. Sclater, 1855) - NC Brazil (W to R Tapajós, S to N Mato Grosso) and N Bolivia (Pando, Beni, N La Paz).
