Taxonomy: C[orvus] pyrrhopterus Bonaparte, 1850, Gilolo [= Halmahera].
Originally described as a crow (Corvidae). Distinctive race obiensis possibly a separate species; study required. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • morotensis Schlegel, 1863 - Morotai and Rau, in N Moluccas.
  • pyrrhopterus ( Bonaparte, 1850) - Halmahera, Kasiruta and Bacan.
  • obiensis Bernstein, 1864 - Bisa and Obi (S of Halmahera).
