Genus sometimes merged with Aceros. Has been thought to form a superspecies with R. subruficollis, and in past these two frequently considered conspecific. Has also been deemed possibly conspecific with R. narcondami, but differs significantly in size and in details of bill colour. Several geographical races have been described, from N Moluccas to C New Guinea (ruficollis), E New Guinea (jungei), Bismarck Archipelago (dampieri), W Solomons (harterti), and E Solomons (mendanae), leaving nominate race for populations of S Moluccas only; ho.. Distribution: N Moluccas, Seram and Ambon through New Guinea and adjacent islands to ­Bismarck Archipelago, and E to Solomon Is (Buka, Bougainville, Shortland, Choiseul, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal and Malaita).
