Taxonomy: Athene dimorpha Salvadori, 1874, Sorong, New Guinea.
Genus closely allied to Ninox; sometimes merged with latter, but wings more rounded. Monotypic.
Distribution: Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea, including Yapen I; probably occurs throughout New Guinea, but known only from NW & SE.
