Trumpeters (Psophiidae)
Pale-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera) - HBW 3, p. 107
French: Agami à ailes blanches
German: Weißflügel-Trompetervogel
Spanish: Trompetero Aliblanco
Other common names: White-winged Trumpeter
Taxonomy: Psophia leucoptera Spix, 1825, Rio Negro; error = left bank of Rio Madeira, Brazil.
Forms superspecies with P. crepitans and P. viridis. Present species sometimes treated as conspecific with P. crepitans; alternatively, race ochroptera transferred to that species, because distribution appears more compatible with that of P. crepitans, and plumage pattern intermediate; however, apparent lack of interbreeding in areas of overlap between P. l. ochroptera and P. c. napensis indicates that these two races probably belong to separate species (see page 96). Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- ochroptera Pelzeln, 1857 - NW Brazil (N of R Amazon/Solimões and W of R Negro).
- leucoptera Spix, 1825 - E Peru, CW Brazil (generally S of R Amazon/Solimões and W of R Madeira) and NE Bolivia.
