Philippines.
Forms
a superspecies with P. percussus and P. xanthopygius,
although some range overlap between these two species in Borneo;
present species (in both sexes) is intermediate between these two in
plumage characters. Described form johannae considered
indistinguishable from nominate. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- culionensis (Rand, 1948) - Calamian Group (Calauit, Busuanga, Culion), in W Philippines.
- plateni A. W. H. Blasius, 1888 - Palawan and Balabac, in W Philippines.
