Taxonomy: Ptilinopus pelewensis Hartlaub and Finsch, 1868, Palau Islands.
Sometimes considered conspecific with P. porphyraceus; within the large P. purpuratus species-group, these two have been considered to form a subgroup with P. richardsii and P. greyii. Monotypic.
Distribution: Palau Is, from Babelthuap to Angaur.
