Taxonomy: Eupetes ajax Temminck, 1836, Lobo, Irian Jaya, New Guinea.
Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- ajax ( Temminck, 1836) - W New Guinea, from W & S coasts of Geelvink Bay S to Triton Bay and W Weyland Mts.
- muscale Rand, 1940 - valley of upper R Fly (R Palmer and R Nomad S to Mt Bosavi), in EC New Guinea.
- alare Mayr & Rand, 1935 - valleys of R Oriomo and lower R Fly, in S New Guinea.
- goldiei ( E. P. Ramsay, 1879) - SE New Guinea (Hall Sound E to Milne Bay).
