Taxonomy: Perdix picta Jardine and Selby, 1828, Bangalore, India.
F. francolinus, present species and F. pintadeanus form a closely related species group; hybridization with F. francolinus occurs in areas of contact. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus retains only F. francolinus, F. pondicerianus, F. gularis, present species and F. pintadeanus in Francolinus. Three subspecies recognized.

  • pallidus (J. E. Gray, 1831) - NC India S to c. 20o N.
  • pictus (Jardine & Selby, 1828) - C & S India N to c. 20o N.
  • watsoni Legge, 1880 - Uva Province, E Sri Lanka.
