Typical Owls (Strigidae)

Pacific Screech-owl (Otus cooperi) - HBW 5, p. 173

French: Petit-duc de Cooper German: Mangroveeule Spanish: Autillo de Manglar
Other common names: Oaxaca Screech-owl (lambi)

Taxonomy: Scops cooperi Ridgway, 1878, Santa Ana, Costa Rica.
Sometimes considered to form superspecies with O. kennicottii, O. seductus and O. asio. Often treated as race of O. asio or O. kennicottii, but appears to be vocally distinct from both. Race lambi proposed as full species, but latest studies indicate that subspecific treatment more appropriate; chiapensis poorly differentiated, possibly not tenable. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • lambi R. T. Moore & Marshall, 1952 - S Mexico (Pacific slope of Oaxaca).
  • chiapensis R. T. Moore, 1947 - SE Mexico (Chiapas).
  • cooperi (Ridgway, 1878) - extreme SE Mexico (S Chiapas) to NW Costa Rica (Guanacaste).
