Other common names: Large-billed/Australian Gull

Taxonomy: Larus pacificus Latham, 1801, New South Wales.
Often placed in separate genus Gabianus, either alone or with Leucophaeus scoresbii. Considered monotypic by some authors. Two subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • georgii P. P. King, 1827 - Western Australia (Shark Bay) S and E to South Australia (Kangaroo I).
  • pacificus Latham, 1801 - Tasmania and Victoria; post-breeding visitor to New South Wales, rarely N to Queensland.
