Taxonomy: Charadrius fulvus Gmelin, 1789, Tahiti.
Forms superspecies with P. dominica, with which formerly considered conspecific (see page 386). Monotypic.

Distribution: NC & NE Russia, from Yamal Peninsula to Chukotskiy Peninsula and S across Koryakskiy highlands to N Kamchatka; W Alaska. Winters from E Africa through S Asia and Indonesia to Oceania, Australia and New Zealand; small numbers in S California.
