Taxonomy: Struthio camelus Linnaeus, 1758, N Africa.
Race molybdophanes might be separate species; may be sympatric with camelus in NE Kenya. Race syriacus recently extinct; possible race spatzi of doubtful validity. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- camelus Linnaeus, 1758 - W & S Sahara, Sahel.
- molybdophanes Reichenow, 1883 - Somalia to Kenya.
- massaicus Neumann, 1898 - S Kenya to Tanzania.
- australis Gurney, 1868 - S Africa.
