Taxonomy: Ciconia boyciana Swinhoe, 1873, Yokohama.
Until recently included in C. ciconia, but the two now generally accepted as distinct species (see page 436). Monotypic.

Distribution: Breeds in SE Siberia and in parts of NE China; winters in S and SE China, with a few in Japan and Korea. Formerly bred in Japan and Korea.
