Taxonomy: Glareola (Pratincola) Maldivarum J. R. Forster, 1795, open sea in the latitude of the Maldive Islands.
Forms superspecies with G. pratincola and G. nordmanni, although some authorities exclude latter from the superspecies. Formerly included in G. pratincola. Monotypic.

Distribution: Extreme S Siberia, NE Mongolia and S Manchuria, S to N India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and SE Asia; also locally in W Japan and Ryukyu Is; has bred in Pakistan, Philippines and Borneo. Winters from India and SE Asia through Indonesia and New Guinea to Australia.
