Other common names: Golden-backed/Yellow-backed Pytilia, Yellow-winged Pytilia(!), Red-faced Finch
Taxonomy: Fringilla afra J. F. Gmelin, 1789, Angola.
Has been thought to form a superspecies with P. phoenicoptera and P. lineata, but such a relationship not supported by molecular analysis. Monotypic.
Distribution: Ethiopia, S Sudan, N Uganda, C & SE Kenya, SE PRCongo (lower Congo Valley), SW, S & SE DRCongo, E Rwanda, S Burundi, Tanzania, Angola, Zambia and Malawi S to extreme NE Namibia (Caprivi), N & E Botswana, N South Africa (Limpopo) and SC Mozambique.
