Taxonomy: Caprimulgus ocellatus Tschudi, 1844, Peru.
Until recently considered conspecific with N. rosenbergi, but differs vocally and may not even be closely related. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- lautus W. deW. Miller & Griscom, 1925 - NE Nicaragua, NW Costa Rica and possibly Panama (Canal Zone); recently discovered breeding in extreme E Honduras.
- ocellatus (Tschudi, 1844) - CS Colombia, NE Ecuador and E Peru to E Brazil and S through Bolivia and Paraguay to NE Argentina and extreme S Brazil.
