Woodpeckers (Picidae)
Ocellated Piculet (Picumnus dorbignyanus) - HBW 7, p. 428
French: Picumne d'Orbigny
German: Orbignyzwergspecht
Spanish: Carpinterito Boliviano
Taxonomy: Picumnus d'Orbignyanus Lafresnaye, 1845, no locality = Bolivia.
Forms a superspecies with P. cirratus and P. temminckii, and sometimes treated as conspecific with former, or with both. Interbreeds with former and with P. albosquamatus. Apparently as the result of a perpetuated error, species name has almost universally been misspelt "i>dorbygnianus", but in original description scientific name incorporated d'Orbigny's name correctly spelt, so rectification is required. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- jelskii Taczanowski, 1882 - Andes of E Peru.
- dorbignyanus Lafresnaye, 1845 - C Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, W Santa Cruz) and extreme NW Argentina (Jujuy, Salta).
