Taxonomy: Picus Nuttalii [sic] Gambel, 1843, Los Angeles County, California.
Forms a superspecies with P. scalaris, both being closely related to P. pubescens. Hybridizes occasionally with both. Monotypic.
Distribution: N California S (mainly W of desert areas) to NW Baja California.
