Other common names: Pintail, Common Pintail; Kerguelen/Eaton's/Southern Pintail (eatoni); Crozet/Southern Pintail (drygalskii)
Taxonomy: Anas acuta Linnaeus, 1758, Europe.
Forms superspecies with A. georgica, with which is sometimes partitioned off in genus Dafila. Southern Hemisphere subspecies sometimes considered to form separate species, Southern Pintail (A. eatoni); some consider drygalskii not separable from eatoni. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- acuta Linnaeus, 1758 - most of Nearctic and Palearctic.
- eatoni (Sharpe, 1875) - Kerguelen I; introduced to St Paul and Amsterdam Is.
- drygalskii Reichenow, 1904 - Crozet Is.
