Jacanas (Jacanidae)
Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa) - HBW 3, p. 291
French: Jacana du Mexique
German: Gelbstirn-Blatthühnchen
Spanish: Jacana Centroamericana
Other common names: (Middle) American Jacana
Taxonomy: Fulica spinosa Linnaeus, 1758, South America; error = western Panama.
Genus occasionally considered to include Hydrophasianus, or alternatively Actophilornis, Irediaparra and Metopidius, but neither proposal widely accepted. Forms superspecies with J. jacana, and considered conspecific by some authors, but evidence not convincing. Accepted races differ mainly in size, and may represent ecotypes rather than genuine races. Three subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- gymnostoma (Wagler, 1831) - Mexico, from SC Sinaloa and C Tamaulipas S to Chiapas, Yucatán and Cozumel I; rarely SE Texas (USA).
- spinosa (Linnaeus, 1758) - Belize and Guatemala S to W Panama.
- violacea (Cory, 1881) - Cuba, I of Pines, Jamaica and Hispaniola.
