Taxonomy: Procellaria glacialis Linnaeus, 1761, within the Arctic Circle = Spitsbergen.
Forms superspecies with F. glacialoides. Birds from N Greenland sometimes considered to form separate race (minor); validity of race auduboni has often been questioned. Three subspecies normally recognized.

- glacialis (Linnaeus, 1761) - high Arctic of N Atlantic.
- auduboni Bonaparte, 1857 - low Arctic and boreal zones of N Atlantic.
- rodgersii Cassin, 1862 - N Pacific.
