Taxonomy: Myrmecocichla aethiops Cabanis, 1850, Senegal.
Has been suggested as possibly conspecific with M. formicivora. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- aethiops Cabanis, 1850 - Senegal and Gambia E to Chad.
- sudanensis Lynes, 1920 - WC & C Sudan.
- cryptoleuca Sharpe, 1891 - W & C Kenya and N Tanzania.
