Taxonomy: Ardea lentiginosa Montagu, 1813, Piddletown, Dorset, England.
May form superspecies with B. pinnatus, and these two sometimes included within B. stellaris superspecies. Monotypic.
Distribution: N and C America, from S and C Canada to Panama; West Indies.
