Taxonomy: Pionias crassus Sharpe, 1884, Ndoruma, upper Uelle River.
Forms a superspecies with P. meyeri, P. rueppellii and P. cryptoxanthus, and possibly others. Formerly treated as a race of P. cryptoxanthus, to which is morphologically extremely close. Monotypic.

Distribution: SW Chad through Central African Republic to extreme SW Sudan and extreme N Zaire.
