Taxonomy: Anas novae Seelandiae Gmelin, 1789, New Zealand = Dusky Sound, South Island, New Zealand.
Considered by some to form superspecies with A. collaris and A. fuligula. Hybridization with A. ferina and A. nyroca recorded in captivity. Population of North I has been assigned separate subspecies, maui, but not usually accepted. Monotypic.

Distribution: New Zealand; fragmented in North I, but more widespread throughout W South I.
