Taxonomy: Podiceps (Poliocephalus) rufopectus G. R. Gray, 1843, North Island, New Zealand.
Formerly included in Podiceps, and less frequently in Tachybaptus. Forms superspecies with P. poliocephalus. Monotypic.

Distribution: North I (and formerly South I), New Zealand.
