Other common names: Papuan Flightless/Grey-faced Rail

Taxonomy: Megacrex inepta D'Albertis and Salvadori, 1879, Fly River, New Guinea.
Very close to Habroptila wallacii; sometimes placed in Habroptila, or in Amaurornis; probably derived from latter. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • pallida Rand, 1938 - NC New Guinea, from R Taritatu (Idenburg) to R Sepik.
  • inepta D'Albertis & Salvadori, 1879 - SC New Guinea, from R Setekwa and R Noord (Lorentz) to R Digul and R Fly.
