Other common names: Olivaceous/Bigua/Brazilian Cormorant; Mexican Cormorant (mexicanus)
Taxonomy: Pelecanus olivaceus Humboldt, 1805, banks of the Magdalena River, lat. 8° 55' N, Colombia.
Original name for species P. brasilianus recently revived, but acceptance and usage of olivaceus widespread, and former may be best considered forgotten name. Sometimes placed in genus Hypoleucos. Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- mexicanus (Brandt, 1837) - NW Mexico and C America, S USA, Bahamas and Cuba.
- olivaceus (Humboldt, 1805) - Panama to Cape Horn.
