Taxonomy: Bucco calvus Lafresnaye, 1841, Ashanti, Ghana.
Apparently related rather closely to G. sladeni and G. peli. Birds from Mt Cameroon S to Gabon formerly separated from nominate, as race major. Three subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- calvus (Lafresnaye, 1841) - Sierra Leone E to Cameroon and Gabon.
- congicus Chapin, 1932 - W Congo (Brazzaville) and W Zaire S to NW Angola.
- vernayi Boulton, 1931 - WC Angolan uplands.
