Taxonomy: Barbatula leucomystax Sharpe, 1892, Sotik, west Kenya.
Forms a superspecies with P. simplex and P. coryphaeus, all three having in past been placed in separate genus Viridibucco. Populations of present species show slight clinal increase in size towards S, but no constant geographical colour differences to warrant subspecific differentiation; birds from Chyulu Hills (Kenya) formerly separated as race chyulu. Monotypic.

Distribution: Extreme E Uganda (Mt Elgon) and C Kenya, S in highlands to Malawi mountains W of Rift Valley.
