Sometimes included in genus Hypsipetes. Specific name sometimes misspelt as macclellandii. Racial delimitation complex, and thorough review required. Some races may represent separate species, e.g. canescens is geographically isolated and does not fit the general pattern of plumage variation; others seem too poorly differentiated or variable to warrant taxonomic recognition.
