Taxonomy: Saxicola sordida Rüppell, 1837, Simen, Ethiopia.
Close to Cercomela, but differs in longer tarsus and shorter tail, and in Oenanthe-like tail pattern. Proposed race rudolfi (Mt Elgon, in Kenya) synonymized with ernesti. Four subspecies recognized.

- sordida ( Rüppell, 1837) - Ethiopia.
- ernesti Sharpe, 1900 - E Uganda and C Kenya.
- olimotiensis Elliott, 1945 - Crater Highlands (N Tanzania).
- hypospodia Shelley, 1885 - Mt Kilimanjaro (N Tanzania).
